Cookies

What are cookies?

We use cookies on our website. Cookies are small text files that may be stored on your computer when you visit websites. This text file stores information, such as your language preference for a website. When you visit the website again later, this cookie is sent back to the website. This allows the website to recognize your browser and remember your language preference, so you don't have to select a language every time.

Why are cookies useful?

Cookies are used to ensure a website functions properly, as illustrated in the example regarding language selection. Another example is a shopping cart that keeps track of your purchases while you're shopping online. Yet another example is the automatic filling in or completion of information in a form.

Which cookies are used and for what purposes?

Four types of cookies are used on the website:

  1. cookies for essential purposes
  2. cookies for functional purposes
  3. cookies for analytical purposes
  4. cookies for marketing purposes

Essential cookies

This means that these cookies are necessary for this website to function properly. You cannot refuse these cookies if you want to use our website.

Functional cookies

These cookies track information about your choices and preferences on a website.

Analytical cookies

Cookies that collect information about website visitors' behavior and the website's performance. Based on the results, the website can be improved and visitors can enjoy a better user experience.

1. We use Google Analytics: A cookie from the U.S.-based company Google is placed via our website as part of the "Analytics" service. We use this service to track and receive reports on how visitors use the website. Google may provide this information to third parties if Google is legally required to do so, or to the extent that third parties process the information on Google's behalf. We have no control over this. We have/have not authorized Google to use the analytics information obtained for other Google services.

The information Google collects is anonymized as much as possible. Your IP address is expressly not shared. The information is transferred to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google adheres to the Safe Harbor principles and is a participant in the U.S. Department of Commerce's Safe Harbor program. This means that an adequate level of protection is in place for the processing of any personal data.

2. Social media: Our website includes buttons that allow you to promote ("like") or share ("tweet") web pages on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. These buttons work using code snippets provided by Facebook and Twitter, respectively. Cookies are placed through this code. We have no control over this. Please read the privacy policies of Facebook and Twitter (which are subject to change) to learn how they handle your (personal) data collected through these cookies.

The information they collect is anonymized as much as possible. The information is transferred to and stored by Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn on servers in the United States. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ adhere to the Safe Harbor Principles and are participants in the U.S. Department of Commerce's Safe Harbor Program. This means that an adequate level of protection is in place for the processing of any personal data.

Marketing cookies

Marketing cookies track the browsing behavior of website visitors; based on this data, a user profile is created to personalize a visitor's browsing experience.

Persistent vs. session cookies

In addition to the types of cookies listed above, we also distinguish between persistent and session cookies.

Persistent cookies

These cookies are stored on your computer for a certain period of time (depending on the settings) and remain there even after you close your browser.

Session cookies

These cookies are deleted as soon as you close your browser. They apply only to the current session and are also called session cookies.

How are cookies stored?

Cookies are stored when you accept them and thus give your consent to store them. You do this by clicking the "Agree" or "Accept" button. You also have the option to decline by clicking the "Decline" button.

How can I adjust my cookie settings and how do I delete cookies?

You can find more information about enabling, disabling, and deleting cookies in the instructions and/or by using your browser's Help feature. If you want to know which cookies have been placed on your device or if you'd like to delete them, you can use a setting in your browser to do so.
